| ARTIST STATEMENT | |
| I spend many hours exploring the natural environment of Mississippi. The mysteries within the swamps, creek beds, and hardwood forests keep me exhilarated and full of questions; this, above all things, is the driving force of my painting. However, great artistic influence comes to me from two converging directions. The first is a color language used to describe light and atmosphere by working directly from nature, as taught by Sammy Britt. The second are in the creative influences coming from the spirit of the work and lives of several artists: Walter Anderson, Charles Burchfield, Emily Carr, Andy Goldsworthy, Mary Oliver, and Georgia O’keefe. Painting feeds my curiosity, sharpens my senses, and deepens my awareness of life – I hope my work reflects a fraction of the beauty I experience. |
