DECEMBER great blue heron, southern leopard frog & hypnum moss

Zen master. Swamp Samurai.  Great Blue Heron’s form is flawless in the cold water.  Invisible in feathery moss.  Elegantly armed with a sharp spear poised and ready.  Pure patience, he stalks by standing still.  His mediation is a fierce and focused attention, waiting for the slightest movement in the mud.  A salamander…or perhaps crawfish.  The noonday sun stirs up a surprise.  BULLSEYE!  That long neck, lighting fast, hurls its weapon with perfect precision to pierce a rare winter treat.  Leopard Frog never knew what happened.  The hitter and the hit are no longer two opposing objects, but are one reality.  Great Blue Heron bows gently and folds back into form.

1 of 3 in the WINTER Collection from Seasons of a Cypress - a series of 12 connected images. 9 images are currently complete.

The original images were created with Mississippi mud and plants and scanned to permanently capture the fresh bright colors of berries, flower petals and leaves pushed into the paper.  color sources to create include: poke salad leaves, red hill dirt, bitterweed, white throated day flower & burned meadow grass

They are stand alone designs or can be arranged as one large cypress tree. The images are in seasonal collections, each month featuring a bird/plant/insect relationship.

9 x 9 digital print, mounted with acid-free glue on book binder’s board, then mounted flush on a handmade pine frame, with 1 in depth. Flush mount allows for side-by-side display, or for stand alone display on a bookshelf or table.
