Don't miss this fun, informative and adventurous (want to paint from a canoe??) workshop with 2 cypress loving artists! Join Carol and renowned watercolorist Robin Whitfield in Lee Tartt Nature Preserve as they help you discover what makes a cypress brake so magical. 

Students will work not only in oils, but also in pastels and watercolors (these will be provided) as they study compositional design, simplification of the landscape and the characteristics of trees. They will also learn how to successfully pack for an outing in the field and will have opportunities to paint from canoes or kayaks.

Cost is $400 and includes  the cost of watercolors, pastels and canoes/kayaks.

Kisatchie Immersive Art Weekend

A Nature, Visual & Culinary Art Experience

Featuring Artists and Nature Enthusiasts, Robin Whitfiled & Aubrey Bolen

Come hang out with Robin and Aubrey in Kisatchie National Forest in Central Louisiana for a weekend! This dynamic duo will show you how nature inspires their creative process. Robin will demonstrate how to use nature as a source of pigment while working in the field with water colors and Aubrey will demonstrate the gear he uses for overnight trips into the backcountry along with the inspiration he draws from all things Kisatchie.

From the trails of this elaborate National Forest, this nature-loving-team will help you navigate unique paths while being influenced by the different forest ecosystems.

Some car camping experience required. Students need to provide their own camping set up. Participants will need to provide their own breakfasts, lunches, snacks and water. Two exclusive dinners will be prepared by local chef, John Foster Gunter, who will utilize cooking themes and menu items that suit the nature trail and art experience.

Explore the visually rich downtown of Greenwood in this all day workshop which will introduce a small portable painting system and techniques to translate complex views and a world of motion into simple arrangements of shapes, colors and textures.

Make a quill, simple brush and ink with natural materials. Inks will be made from plant based materials including black walnuts, oak galls and poke berries.

Write, draw and paint with inks on watercolor paper inspired by calligraphy, chases brush painting and the mediums themselves.

Prepare to play!
This 2 day workshop offers Robin’s creative practice for connecting to nature with water based media. The workshop will focus on exploring wild places with both watercolor and foraged pigments as a way to relate to a place and its inhabitants.

Day 1 - PALETTE OF PLACE / Introduction to foraging for water, pigments and creative tools in any landscape.

●  Explore and forage around urban Alexandria or a local natural area

●  Creative play with a buffet of foraged plant and mineral pigments

●  Create color samples and visual ideas with a combination of created and traditional art making tools

●  Use painting, layering, collage, stencils and other methods to create finished imagery


Day 2 - SHAPE OF PLACE / Introduction to watercolor as a way to find order and relate to any landscape

● Watercolor basics - Introduction to materials and methods in the studio and on location

● Group exercises - practice 3 shape compositions, mixing colors on paper, balancing color relationships, playing with texture and timing

● Individual experiences - explore the poetry of the local landscape with problem solving assistance

EARTH COLOR WORKHOP

Earth Color Workshop 

led by artist and naturalist Robin Whitfield

What is earth color?  colors found in the wild. Colors may come from mud, leaves, berries, flower petals, mushrooms or mineral deposits. 

Participants will forage for wild plant and mineral materials from the museum campus and pearl river and Lefluers Bluff nature trails. A buffet of raw mineral colors from around the state will be available for processing into uniform pigment powders. Walnut and iron gall inks will be discussed and available alongside an introduction to basic brush and quill making. Creative exercises will lead up to the creation of an earth color mandala on watercolor paper.

A Mandala is a circular symbol representing the universe. Mandalas may be employed for focusing attention and for establishing a sacred space.
